When life hits a crossroad, some people look for a spiritual sign. Others jump into a digital space and seek guidance from family and friends. For Adele Vanarsdale, director of campus project planning at Iowa, the sign she needed was delivered on the side of an 18-wheeler.

In appreciation of Women's History Month, UI Business Services is highlighting several staff who have been integral to the unit’s success and workplace in recent years.

Lew Montgomery, interim senior human resources director for University of Iowa Finance and Operations, was recently honored as a Big 10 Black Alumni of the Year representing the UI.

The University of Iowa Finance and Operations unit is a multifaceted organization providing services to the campus in business services, facilities, finance, and public safety. The F&O organization is comprised of over 1,100 employees committed to serving the university community in a variety of ways.

Each day, UI Laundry Services processes about 24,000 pounds of linens. Most of the processed linens are for UI Hospitals & Clinics and range from washcloths and blankets to healthcare scrubs and lab coats. The team of 45 staff at Laundry Services is dedicated to their work, and it has taken on greater meaning during the pandemic.

The 2017 Diversity Catalyst Award winner is Gabby Blanchard-Shreck, Police Officer III. Officer Blanchard-Shreck started with the University of Iowa Police Department in 2013 and is active in community policing initiatives within the department. She manages the department’s Rape Aggression Defense program, the Fair and Impartial Policing training program, and is part of the Crisis Intervention Team in Johnson County.
