UI Cambus is piloting new safety equipment on two buses that is intended to help transit operators be more aware of vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians and cyclists, and prevent collisions.

The new equipment features three separate components that work together to improve safety: a collision avoidance and warning system, digital traffic mirrors, and a pedestrian alert system.

The safety equipment is designed to tackle issues related to limited visibility and blind spots, which are particularly challenging with large vehicles like buses. The pilot program is expected to last one to two years, with the possibility of equipping additional buses to further assess its effectiveness.
